Or more people killed each other from being cooped up together, or more people OD'd on fentanyl for lack of anything more entertaining to do during lockdown. With reports of cardiovascular ER visits way down, it's not surprising there may be some upward pressure on numbers of deaths. A nation can't fundamentally change its mode of operation for hundreds of millions of people and not get some changes to phenomena resulting in death. I figure it will take five years or so to unwind all of the data and publish detailed accountings for changes in the overall numbers. Assuming biases in cause-of-death reporting can be corrected, it will be interesting to see how much or how little is due to the coronavirus itself.
