Australia is very sparsely populated and most of the folks live along the coasts, especially southeast the Melbourne to Sydney corridor. All of the rest of the country is "The bush (pronounced "boosh" there) and "outback". The Bush is areas that are semi-inhabited/inhabitable generally close to towns. The Outback is completely wild/untamed, etc., and covers 90% of the island as far as square miles/kilometers, etc.
Putting a fire out there would be like peeing on a house that's burning. Environmentalists working against creating fire breaks and other stop-gap measures need to be strung up and let the buzzards chow down on them.
