350 pound Warsaw Grouper caught off of Southwest Florida

SOUTHWEST, Fla. - What a catch! A 350 pound Warsaw Grouper was caught off of Southwest Florida.

Biologists from FWRI's Age & Growth Lab estimated the fish's age at 50 years old, making this the oldest sample collected from their aging program, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said.

FWC said samples from larger and older fish are rare, so getting the Warsaw Grouper's otolith was valuable.

The fish was caught on Dec. 29 in 600 feet of water, according to FWC. Adults are usually found in 180-1700 foot water, while juveniles are occasionally found around jetties and shallow-water reefs in the northern Gulf.
