You see that gigantic cavernous hole? It's tiny. This is a .223 barrel. It's still gigantic in comparison to those tinier gilding metal patches you're seeing. They don't matter.
You can take a beautifully finished anything, magnify it enough and observe the ripped up surface. When that surface is inside a barrel it will scrape off tiny bits of whatever comes in contact with it.
