Can’t go into too much detail, mostly cause I’m too lazy to write it all out, but there are presently some pretty cool little drones that can be deployed from the air from various cargo aircraft. They are pretty small and can be shot out of tubes in the bottom of the aircraft and loiter in an area for hours. I’m not sure how they plan on air recovery but even ignoring that the capabilities are pretty neat.
In the longer term it seems like it would make a lot of sense to have something with some real range and speed like a 777 or 747 that could spit these things out by the hundreds or thousands with an automated system. Makes a lot more sense to use a more generic aircraft as they can launch out of tubes and don’t require a special door in the rear like is used for traditional military airdrop or wing mount pylons.
